Arbutus Law Group works with Indigenous communities on a range Indigenous-led conservation initiatives including:
- Indigenous protected and conserved areas (“IPCAs”)
- guardians programs
- remediation and restoration of contaminated and degraded lands and waters.
Our team draws on our experience working at the intersection of Indigenous law, Canadian law, Indigenous ecological knowledge, and scientific expertise to support Indigenous communities working to establish and operate IPCAs and Guardians programs. We also take this integrated approach to our advocacy for site remediation and restoration that aligns with community values and goals.
Our work includes:
- providing strategic legal and policy advice to Indigenous governments
- negotiating with federal, provincial and territorial departments, ministries and agencies to establish IPCA co-designation and co-management agreements
- drafting and implementing management plans, for both IPCA enforcement and education
- providing legal support throughout the process of and contaminated sites identification, assessment, remediation and restoration
